Inoue Mao becomes student for a day

Inoue Mao and her co-star Jonathan Sherr from the movie 'Darling wa Gaikokujin' visited the University of Tsukuba Elementary School on 25th April. In a tie-up with MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), Inoue and Sherr took part in a classroom activity to promote the study of the English language which will become part of the curriculum of Japan's elementary schools from 2011.
Inoue sat together with 39 students from Grade 6 and Sherr took his place as a teacher, quizzing the class on the theme of food. The boy seated next to Inoue was so nervous, he was looking down the whole time. Inoue finally managed to extract a smile from him when she explained some of the answers to him.
Inoue said,"It has been a long while since I took part in a class, it was fun. I'm surprised at how much vocabulary everyone knows. Girls, if you want to get a wonderful darling (like Sherr), study hard for English!"

Tokyo Girls Collection Spring/Summer 2010
The 10th Tokyo Girls Collection took place in Yokohama Arena on 6th March, drawing a crowd of 25,000 screaming fans to the premier fashion event that introduces casual wear for the coming seasons.
21 brands were showcased by more than 70 popular models and special guests. As the models strutted down the runway in the spring/summer collection, the audience can order anything that catches their eye on the spot through their mobile phones.
The guest models were also a highlight of the event. Popular personality Becky appeared in her 'Prince on his day off' inspired look, drawing loud cheers from the crowd. IMALU modeled a jacket and bag she designed herself and Inoue Mao appeared in a pure white wedding dress.
In the second half of the show, Kato Miliyah, Koda Kumi and Shimizu Shota performed live. The 'Real Clothes Festival' lasted for more than 6 hours.

We had a party to celebrate the completion of 'Darling wa Gaikokujin' the other day!
When the cuts from the overseas location were shown on screen, the Japanese staff members were delighted!
Seemed like it was very cold but also really fun, I'm so jealous♪
During the party, the lottery was the big climax!!
Mao-san won mentaiko (*laugh*)
I look forward to it arriving at the office!
It opens next spring and there's still half a year to go but I think it's going to be a really great film!

Actor Enjoyed Filming in Westfield
Sherr said town reminded him of Iowa home.

Jonathan Sherr is an Iowa native making his way in the world of foreign actors working in Japan. Last week that career brought him to Westfield.
Sherr is the male lead in "My Darling is a Foreigner," a Japanese romantic comedy filmed partially in Westfield during two days last week. Sherr's character in the film is an American living in Japan who falls in love with a Japanese woman, portrayed by Mao Inoue. Following a series of cultural differences Sherr returns home to Westfield, where Inoue follows him and they reconnect on the front lawn of the Presbyterian Church.
Sherr enjoyed his time in his fictionial hometown, saying it reminded him of his real hometown of Fairfield, Iowa.
"It's a great town, a truly American town," Sherr said of his time in Westfield.
Sherr majored in Japanese in college and then landed a job with a Tokyo company. While living in Tokyo he found himself getting to know more and more actors and discovered there was a growing community of foreign actors working exclusively in Japan.
"I got a little bored with the corporate life and was looking for something different," Sherr said. "I made friends who were actors and this was something I wanted to try."
His career has included a variety of roles in Japan leading up to the current film, his first movie lead, casting him opposite Inoue, one of the most famous actresses in Japan. Inoue was unavailable for comment for this story, with film producers saying her office had not approved interviews while she was in Westfield.
Sherr said he was a bit intimidated by the scope of being the male lead and working alongside Inoue. He said that he enjoyed being able to work with her.
"She's extraordinarily talented and I had to raise my game," he said. "I started out overwhelmed by the scale and speed it was moving. It took a while to catch up and she was instrumental in that. The more I worried, the more I held it up. She was instrumental in helping me relax."
Sherr hopes this movie has a societal impact on Japan. He said there has been a history of cultural clashes in marriages between Japanese citizens and foreign citizens, which has been growing in number. He hopes the film will be able to highlight the issue and show how the couples can come together.
Outside of hoping to make a positive impact on Japanese culture, Sherr said the entire work of his first feature film lead has been a positive experience and that he is looking forward to more.
"It's exciting," Sherr said of the project. "Hopefully it leads to good places. I thoughly enjoyed myself when I wasn't panicking."

I'm back!

I'm back from America!
So many people visited this blog and left comments, I'm really happy!
I didn't have time to update my blog there so excuse the 'belated report' I'm doing.
In America, filming started from morning, and with the jet-lag of about 8 hours difference, the schedule felt a little unbalanced. However it was a great experience and I felt blessed everyday.
30th September (Wednesday) (29th over there)
After about 10 hours in the air, we finally reached New York.
It's colder than Tokyo so it was off to buy warmer wear immediately!
(It was cold on location so Mao-chan and the staff went to buy jackets)
I was together with Mao-chan in the plane and in the car to the hotel so I accompanied her shopping as well.
After buying jackets, I found a shop selling a brand I like 'American Eagle'. I had to accompany everyone this time and Mao-chan said to me with a cute smile,"Guess it can't be helped~."
We heard each other's opinions on the clothes and there was this wonderful atmosphere like we were on a date.
It's not that often that a chance like 'Shopping with Mao-chan' comes around, does it?
Later, about 4 more of the staff members came and everyone had fun shopping together! (;^_^A
Because of lack of sleep that day, I had trouble feeling the 'sense of reality' that I was in America, although I myself am American. I only felt it concretely when I gazed at the skyscrapers and as I looked right and left I kept saying to myself,"What a strange feeling."
The power of the streets of New York that never sleeps is overwhelming..
I got up quite early everyday, the next day I woke up at 4:30 and took a photo of New York in the morning. (To be more accurate, this should be written as the photo of the next day... well, no matter?)
The Chrysler Building was nearby too,
it's a great place, I'll definitely want to go again!

It seems that NY was really cold...
The weather was unfavourable, and there weren't any off days but in the little free time she had, she went shopping I hear.
From now on, I'll be hearing a lot of travel stories from Mao-san, I'll write them another day ne ♪
Mao's cab driver in NY?
New York talent John Shasanmi was chosen to audition for the feature film '"My Darling is a Foreigner". He auditioned to play the role of a taxi cab driver for the Japanese film.
If selected he will be paid a day rate with a total of 3 days booked. The 30 year old actor and singer has been with us since May. Good luck John, were rooting for you!

Her co-star in 'Darling wa Gaikokujin', Jonathan Sherr-san.
Diligent, gentle and with a sense of humour, he conveys his feelings of gratitude readily. A really wonderful person.
During stand-by times, he will read out his lines for the next scene and confirm them with Mao-san.
Among the staff, Jon-san soothes everyone too.
I think there are those who already know but Jon-san started a blog for this filming!!

Filming in Japan has safely ended
24th September 2009
Good evening.
Sorry for not writing. We're heading for overseas filming soon!
I couldn't get to the PC so I'm slow in updating the blog.
With various things happening, filming in Japan is over in the blink of an eye!
Much took place, it was really a good experience.
I'm deeply grateful. It had matured me.
The final scene was at a beach and the weather was really hot.
When the final scene was over, the staff gathered around me and Mao-chan, and the director presented us with bouquets of flowers.
I became flustered. For me? And furthermore I was told "Please say something~".
"Overseas filming has not ended yet, this shoot felt long and short at the same time," I said but there are things I forgot to mention.
I've made it here because I was with Mao-chan, because of the director and the staff, and because of everyone's support.
I don't think I would have got over the first 2 days if not for everyone's kindness. (I was pretty panicky)
We're filming overseas but there are staff members who are not going.
It felt a little sad but everyone parted warmly.
I think everyone worked hard together so we could make a good film.
And I feel like I'll definitely meet everyone again, (Well, there's still the job well done party right! (-^□^-))
I'll do my best on the overseas filming!!

It's been a while.
These past few days I have often came back home late and have little free time. Sorry...
I've just about gotten used to filming.
For the last cut today, the director gave me an 'OK!' in one cut,
it made me so happy. I've gotten to this point all thanks to the staff and Mao-chan,
everyday we are able to complete filming without a hitch.
I'm deeply grateful.
There's something 'fashionable' going on at filming location these days.
For protection from the new strain of influenza, everyone wears a mask on location.
Then what they've started doing is putting designs on their masks.

Can everyone read that??
It's a Japanese word that the producer taught me today, it means 'to think of the feelings of those around, to consider', it's read 'omonbakaru'.
I was taught a good word ne!
Certainly for the 'omonbakara' me, I would want to be considerate to those around. (^O^)
Today's filming was in the studio the whole day too.
For some reason, there were many children today.
Was there an audition? Or they came for filming?
It seems the children study English, all of a sudden they came to talk to me.
"What's your favourite food?" they asked, and when I answered, "Pickles,"
they burst into laughter. (*⌒∇⌒*)
Wonder if I said something strange?
By the way, the other day I asked in the blog "What does this photo look like?",
to me it looks like a clown! Did you get my thought...?

Today's filming

Good evening.
Great weather today too!
But actually because I was filming in the studio the whole day, I didn't notice the time at all!
Somehow it felt like it was about 2 in the afternoon the whole time but when I went out, it had gotten dark.
Well that's a bit of an exaggeration. There was a scene change and after changing outfits, I went back to the studio. Although I knew it was dark out, it was really strange that when I went back in, it felt like noon again.
Something interesting happened at lunch today.
I ate tarako spaghetti at the cafeteria.
I thought it was just a normal order but for some reason, many people went
"Ah, it's tarako spaghetti."
The voices were all around and I attracted curious attention.
Surprisingly, they didn't know it was on the menu. Actors from other filming sets were also called over!
There was someone who looked like he wanted to eat it badly and jokingly asked me "How about sharing half?"
"No, it's okay," that's how the conversation ended up. No doubt he will eat it tomorrow.
Every time I come to the studio, I receive refreshments from various people. Especially today, I got this much!
I'll do my best tomorrow too!

Good evening.
Great weather today too~! It's gradually getting cooler (suzushii).
Somehow today I keep making the mistake of saying 'samushii'.
Maybe that's the gap between cool (suzushii) and cold (samui)?
I want to keep on doing my best for the Japanese language...
Just as I predicted yesterday, the guy who came to talk to me about my tarako spaghetti ended up eating it!
Lunch was a little smaller today. (By the way it was cold noodle.)
Because, woah! For refreshments, the crepe store was waiting!!
After eating the banana chocolate whipped cream, in the next scene I had to eat chocolate ice cream, and I ended up with quite a sugar rush.
When my blood sugar level gets too high, I get dizzy. Hopeless, hopeless.
Recently (these past 2 days?) food has become the topic.
This blog seems to be heading towards a blog that talks only about food...
As expected, autumn brings in the appetite!

Good evening!
Sorry for the late blog update!
During the weekend, our filming location was near the sea.
It was a little troublesome with the rain falling intermittently
but the ones suffering the most were the staff who were doing their best in the rain.
Really much appreciated!
The breeze at the beach was pretty chilly, Mao-chan and me felt quite cold.
Made me feel summer is over.
Although I do like autumn.
We've been at this location 3 times and there's this mark that has aーーーlways bothered me.
Seems like some sort of damage on a pillar but to me it looks like I can see something in it.
Can you see anything?
Maybe it's something like a Rorschach test but don't worry. There are no marks for it!
A flower I've never seen is also in bloom.
Today we had filming in studio.
We finished filming safely today too!
In the photo is Ucchi-sensei and the assistant from Hair and Make-up, Eita-san who have always taken care of me. They came today. Eita-san seems to change the design? every 2 weeks.
His charm point is his hairstyle?

Good evening!
Sorry for the late blog update!
During the weekend, our filming location was near the sea.
It was a little troublesome with the rain falling intermittently
but the ones suffering the most were the staff who were doing their best in the rain.
Really much appreciated!
The breeze at the beach was pretty chilly, Mao-chan and me felt quite cold.
Made me feel summer is over.
Although I do like autumn.
We've been at this location 3 times and there's this mark that has aーーーlways bothered me.
Seems like some sort of damage on a pillar but to me it looks like I can see something in it.
Can you see anything?
Maybe it's something like a Rorschach test but don't worry. There are no marks for it!
A flower I've never seen is also in bloom.
Today we had filming in studio.
We finished filming safely today too!
In the photo is Ucchi-sensei and the assistant from Hair and Make-up, Eita-san who have always taken care of me. They came today. Eita-san seems to change the design? every 2 weeks.
His charm point is his hairstyle?

Filming Day 5
Hello!
I received many messages of support, really happy.
I'm thankful that Mao-chan's fans are also rooting for me.
Thank you very much! Thank you!!
I want to reply to each one but we're filming so I'm sorry if I'm late in updating the diary or answering your comments.
I'm thinking of putting up a photo with Mao-chan soon but please wait a little longer ne.
Filming is going ahead every day.
We went to a location near the sea during the weekend.
The setting sun was beautiful~.
The filming for Saturday was relaxed so we were able to enjoy filming.
「ENJOY」
Mao-chan's favourite word ne.
Can you see a face?? :-)
Everyone's encouragement really gives me strength.
On the way back, I met someone who was walking many dogs.
Seems like he rescues abandoned dogs, in total he's caring for 18 of them.
Sounds difficult but a a truly fantastic effort.
Filming Day 6
31st August 2009
Today's location was also near the sea.
The weather was suspect...
Up to now, we have been filming fun scenes but today we started having scenes where I had to express more complicated emotions and expressions.
So when the cameraman told me today,"When I saw today's scenes, I really felt sad too," I thought,"I managed to convey it!" and felt very happy.
Unfortunately, it started to rain in the evening and we couldn't do the outdoors filming.

Darling wa Gaikokujin

The comic essay by Oguri Saori-sensei 'Darling wa Gaikokujin' is being made into a movie.
Mao-san is playing the main role!
Just as the name says, her darling is a foreigner and Mao-san is an aspiring manga illustrator.
She's playing Oguri-sensei herself♪
It's scheduled to open in Toho Cinemas nationwide in spring of 2010.

"Everyone! My next darling is a foreigner! (*laugh*)
The laughs never stop at the relaxed filming location, we enjoy filming everyday♪
Jonathan who plays the role of Tony is great(^^)
I want to play Saori just like in the original work, cute and always working very hard!

In the relentless summer heat we've been having recently, she's diligently filming every day!!

2nd day of filming

Today we filmed an evening scene.
A scene using props.
It looks easy but when I gave it a try it went quite badly...
We had to do so many retakes, I felt so miserable making all the staff members wait...
Without thinking I said "Sorry..." and the director said,"No need to apologize!"
There are many, many things I have to learn.
Tonight I will get a good rest, switch modes and work hard tomorrow too!

Lately Mao-san has been busy everyday with filming for the movie that will open next year and magazine interviews for 'Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu'.

First experience of purification

Hello!
I'm Jonathan Sherr.
I'm playing the role of Tony in the movie 'Darling wa Gaikokujin'. Accordingly, I'm writing a blog! I'd be happy if I can share my experience with everyone. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu!
Finally, tomorrow's crank-in!! Today to pray for safety during filming and success of the movie, I took part in a purification ceremony. (In Japan, people pray at the shrine for important intentions. Interesting.)
With many of the staff members kneeling in the shrine, the prayers started. Kneeling beside Inoue Mao-chan, my name was called and we prayed. Bowed twice, clapped twice, bowed once. This was my first experience. Refreshing! I felt motivated!
From now on, I will experience different things and they will be fresh and valuable ones for me. I feel really excited.
(May this be a good production!)
I pray for it! And with all my might, I'll do my best!!

Today was the first day of filming!
When I got on location, starting with Inoue Mao-san, the one who plays Tony's partner Saori, I was surrounded by many staff members and all the different people involved. I was so nervous.
And some girls who were sightseeing said they wanted my autograph, I was shocked!! "From me~?" I thought as I signed autographs. Felt a little embarrassed...
Things moved fast on location and it feels like a first day that ended after a lot of effort.
But the staff members supported me with their kindness! Thank you very much!!
This feeling, without forgetting how I feel from the beginning, I'll do my best till the end~!!
Oh yeah, today there was a chiffon cake used for a cafe scene. After filming, I ate it, it was really delicious.
But it seems Mao-chan doesn't really like sweet things...
Well I have a sweet tooth, so I took Mao-chan's share as well. Thanks for the treat!
